An intervention to cut back power generation can help free up grid capacity in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape to connect more renewable energy projects to Eskom's grid.
While Eskom previously said that no grid capacity had been available in the two provinces, a recent addendum in its grid assessment would mean that 3 470MW could be allocated for wind projects.
According to the Eskom's Generation Connection Capacity Assessment (GCCA) for 2025, published in October last year, grid capacity in the provinces had been depleted by previous renewable energy bid windows and private renewable energy projects.
