Cape Town is set to host the fourth awards ceremony of the Earthshot Prize, founded by the UK's Prince William, in November.
The global environmental prize aims to promote innovative solutions that repair and restore the planet. It was founded by Prince William in 2020, and supported by the Royal Foundation for a year before becoming an independent organisation.
Previous award ceremonies were held in London (2021), Boston (2022) and Singapore (2023).
There are five award categories, Protect and Restore Nature; Clean Our Air; Revive Our Oceans; Build a Waste-Free World; and Fix Our Climate. Fifteen finalists will be selected from around the world, and only five winners will be chosen (for each of the categories). The five winners will be awarded £1 million or R23.8 million to scale their solutions, the organisation said in a statement.
"This is the Earthshot Decade, a decade in which we must, by 2030, reduce CO2 emissions by over 40%, and protect 30% of nature, oceans, and freshwater," said Hannah Jones, CEO of Earthshot Prize.

According to organisers, there were nearly 2 500 entries from 432 nominators.
Nearly 400 nominees are Africa-based. The continent has contributed the least to greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change, but it is most vulnerable to climate impacts.
"Yet, in the face of these challenges, nearly all African countries have committed to enhancing climate action through reducing their greenhouse gas emissions and building resilience," the organisation said.
Apart from the awards ceremony, Cape Town will also host a retreat for the finalists, where they will receive mentorship, resources, other technical support and access to a network of businesses, philanthropists, investors and environmental organisations.
Among the partners of this year's prize is Multichoice Group. "In partnership with MultiChoice, The Earthshot Prize will provide a platform to African Youth Creators to spotlight and celebrate African solutions and the people behind them," the organisation said.
Finalists will be announced in September.
