The year 2021 can be characterised by growing calls for action against climate change, evident in the release of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report in August, which warned of unprecedented climate change events globally, brought on by rising temperatures.
Just over two months later, the UN climate change conference COP26 was held in Glasgow, and countries agreed to phasing down coal, among efforts to combat climate change.
As a signatory to the Paris Agreement, South Africa, the world's 12 biggest greenhouse gas emitter, has also made climate action commitments.
