The SABC describes the current financial crisis as 'the most critical for the future and sustainability of this 84-year-old institution'.

While its loss would be "unthinkable", experts say the survival of public broadcaster the SABC is hanging in the balance without another bailout – which it is by no means guaranteed to get.

Its funding model is also in desperate need of review – but the bill that would enable this has not yet been passed by Parliament.
