- Transnet said it would investigate a fire that occurred on Pier 2 of a container terminal in Durban.
- This comes after another fire occurred on Saturday on a separate container of the same consignment.
- Transnet said it was in contact with South African Revenue Service's Customs unit and other relevant authorities on the matter.
Transnet is investigating the cause of a fire that broke out at a container terminal pier at the Durban port on Monday morning.
The state-owned ports and logistics company said the container fire happened at Pier 2. This incident follows another container fire on Saturday from the same consignment as Monday's. The fires have been contained.
Transnet said the affected goods affected goods would be declared in terms of the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) codes and that the shipping agent responsible for them would be contacted to establish what they were.
"Each consignment that enters the port is required to be declared in terms of the IMDG codes, and a call has been made to the responsible shipping agent to establish what was in the container," the statement said.
Transnet said it was in contact with South African Revenue Service's Customs unit and other relevant authorities on the matter.
"The affected containers have now been moved to an isolated stacking area and the cargo owners will be required to evacuate them as soon as possible," the statement said.
This also comes after multiple incidences at the company since 2021 that have stalled or frustrated its operations.
Last year, Transnet was the target of multiple cyberattacks, damage to infrastructure and a power outage at its Richards Bay facility.
In October Transnet was forced to declare a force majeure at following an enormous fire at its Richards Bay Dry Bulk Terminal.
