Retailers see opportunities as inflation pushes consumers to no-name brands

Belt-tightening has begun. Consumers have started delaying big appliance purchases and more people are choosing their retailers' private labels over known food and grocery brands, said some of the retailers who spoke at the SA Tomorrow conference on Wednesday.

Food prices - notably oil and fat - have rocketed; fuel prices increased by 32.5% in May; and SA's consumer inflation hit 6.5% last month, breaching the upper limit of the SA Reserve Bank's target range of 4% to 6%.
