Small investors can now get direct exposure to one of South Africa’s most valuable crops: macadamias.
The "crowdfarming" platform Livestock Wealth, which was founded in 2015 to allow investors to buy shares in cattle, has branched out and now includes macadamia trees.
It takes six years for macadamia trees to produce their first harvest and once they do, a hectare, which has about 300 trees, can fetch farmers about R350 000 a year. Some 98% of the local harvest is exported.
