The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) and the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) have demanded that the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) pay workers at the agency and its subsidiaries their total outstanding salaries by 2 November.
The two unions also demanded that the group CEO Zolani Matthews be removed or resign, claiming that the chief was "politically myopic". The unions held a march to the Department of Transport in Tshwane on Friday.
Organised labour representing employees of Prasa have been raising the alarm at challenges related to the payment of salaries at the company and its bus transport subsidiary Autopax. A march was held to Prasa's offices in Johannesburg earlier in the month.
