At the start of the deciduous fruit season, South African farmers have bumper crops for export - but they will struggle to get it out of Cape Town port.
Due to the ailing performance of the port, UK and European retailers are now no longer considering South Africa as a reliable fruit supplier and looking elsewhere, exporters say.
In September this year, the vessel turnaround time (the time between the arrival of a vessel and its departure) at the port reached 94 hours – the longest turnaround time since the pandemic.
