SABC: How anger over job cuts led to a strike at the public broadcaster

Threats of a programming blackout loomed large at public broadcaster SABC as some workers downed tools on Friday to protest a planned retrenchment process to cut costs. 

The Communication Workers Union led the strike after the cash-strapped state-owned enterprise's management did not immediately accept its demands to unconditionally stop the retrenchment process that would impact up to 400 staff. 

The SABC has for years been suffering financially from declining ad revenues and low rates of license payments, which according to critics have been worsened by mismanagement.
