The South African Broadcasting Corporation announced at midnight on Friday that it would suspend its retrenchment consultations for a week.

On Wednesday Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Communications sent the SABC board back to the drawing board and on Thursday the board held a marathon meeting to chart a way forward after staff refused to accept retrenchment notices for some 400 of their colleagues.

"The Board of the SABC would like to announce that it will suspend the section 189 process for a period of seven days. This will allow all stakeholders to further engage and explore further options in an effort to ensure the financial sustainability of the SABC," the SABC statement said.

On Thursday the Communication Workers Union threatened to go on strike trigger a blackout of SABC if the notices were not withdrawn, while the Broadcast, Electronic, Media and Allied Workers Union said it had lodged a court challenged head to interdict the retrenchments.
