If President Cyril Ramaphosa proves to be correct that the end of load shedding is in sight, it will not be because of the government, but in spite of it, at least one analyst believes.

In his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on 8 February 2024, the president hailed government's "clear plan" to address the country's energy crisis, which has seen rolling power cuts escalating over a period of years – with last year being the worst on record.

"We set out a simple plan to end load shedding, which we have been implementing with a single-minded focus through the National Energy Crisis Committee (Necom)," said Ramaphosa on Thursday.
