With more than 370 000 students, Unisa enrols nearly a third of all South African tertiary students. Launched 150 years ago, it counts Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, President Cyril Ramaphosa, former Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng and Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago among its graduates.
But following years of controversies and mismanagement, government now wants to put Unisa under administration.
