Menstruation is a topic many shy away from. Although most women are affected by it at some stage in their life, only a few women participate in conversations around menstruation, let alone write about it.

Flow: The book about Menstruation has been written by a dynamic group of authors, namely; Candice Chirwa, Karen Jeynes, Pontsho Pilane with Dr Ilana Johnson, Tariq Hoosen and Claire Fourie and published by Kwela, to inform, educate, and empower those who menstruate and love people who menstruate.

Flow is broadly divided into physical, psychological and political aspects of menstruation. Topics like what menstruation is, why it happens, what is healthy menstruation, how to keep things clean during your period, and how to control your menstruation are discussed in detail.

The book also provides the reader with critical medical facts about menstruation.

The book discusses how society sees menstruation and what different cultures have to say. Part of the conversation will include looking at the problematic opinions on menstruation shared on social media.

How to tackle some of the stigma and embarrassment are also discussed in great detail.

Other topics covered include some of the concerns of those starting to menstruate, those who are struggling, and those who never really understood it.

The book aims to help menstruators educate themselves and those around them about menstruation and, in the process, befriend their bodies.

The book will be available in bookstores and online by 20 August 2021, but readers can secure a copy by contacting Kwela books publicist Helene Prinsloo via email.
