As it’s quite a heavy-going make-up trend, I've decided to show you how you can do a toned-down version for the day.
I know that we all have bills to pay, so I've made this tutorial as budget-friendly as possible.
All products used are available at Clicks and Dis-Chem, and won’t have you weeping when you look at your bank statement.

Step one: start fresh
Apply your foundation and keep your eyes fresh. (Make sure yesterday’s make-up has been removed!)
Step two: apply a light shade all over your lid
Apply a light shade as a base. As this is a daytime smokey eye look, you want to keep it as fresh as possible. Keep the darker shades for the night.
Product used: here I used the Absolute Rose palette from Catrice (R89.95) – I used the first shade on the far left. The colour on the far right is perfect for a night time look!
Step three: draw the line
In this step I drew a line on my top lid. You really don’t have to worry about doing this perfectly, as you’re going to go over it with black eyeshadow anyway. (You can do this with any eyeliner!)
Product used: I am OBSESSED with my Jumbo Eyeliner Pen (About R50) from Essence. I've been using it for about a year, and it’s really super versatile. You can use it for Taylor Swift-style cat eyes too!
Step four: blend it like Beckham
Take black eyeshadow and go over the line you drew in step 3. It’s really up to you how dark you want to go. You can keep going over it until it’s as dark as you want it to be. I only went over it once in this tutorial, as I prefer to keep it subtle for the day.

Step five: apply eyeshadow to your bottom lid
Now that you've done your top lid, you should mirror it on your bottom lid. Just take your eyeshadow brush, dab it in the black eyeshadow, look up and apply it on your bottom lid. If there’s any excess powder, just remove it with a wet wipe and apply foundation below your eyes to prevent zombie eyes.
To finish off, apply some mascara. I used Catrice Jet Lash Speed Volume here. (R79.99)

Step six: Add a subtle shade of lipstick
Like I said, I like to keep it as fresh as possible in the day, and that means wearing a nude lipstick. For a night time look you can wear burgundy for a sexy dramatic look.
