- Robotics and coding will form part of the 2023 curriculum for younger grades.
- The Department of Basic Education (DBE) hopes that Grade 9s will also be learning these two subjects in 2025.
- The DBE will implement these subjects to prepare children for the changing world and job specs of the future.
In 2021, three new subjects namely Kiswahili; Entrepreneurship and Robotics and Coding were successfully trialed in 54 schools for Grade R to 9.
Recently, the Department of Education has confirmed that Robotics and Coding will be officially added to our school curriculum for the 2023 academic year during the 2021 Virtual Basic Education Lekgotla on Thursday, 24 February 2022.
Currently, the Department of Basic Education is busy testing the subject for Grades 4 to 6 and Grade 8, for inclusion in the 2024 curriculum.
The trials will start in 2024 for Grade 9s, and plans for a complete integration are underway for this grade in 2025.
The new subject has been added with the belief that these skills will equip and expose learners to digital literacy, virtual reality, augmented reality, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things.
Having this knowledge will also help these pupils when looking for employment.
President Cyril Ramaphosa reminded us that the world is changing, and it needs individuals who are ready for it. Having Robotics and Coding in schools will prepare learners for this changing world.
The Department of Education plans to upskill and train teachers who will teach these new subjects in collaboration with Higher Education Institutions.
