A makeover you don’t want to miss

Once again Dove has taken another revolutionary step in the world of beauty.

Back in 2004, Unilever launched the Dove True Beauty Campaign and since then it has been taking strides towards changing the idea of how women view their beauty.

Dove’s latest innovation is the Makeover App. Initially I thought this meant a physical makeover that involves loads of make-up and a new wardrobe.

I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that this was more of an inner makeover, not so much outer. The purpose of the app is to make women feel better about themselves by changing the way they think instead of the way they look.

The makeover app came after Dove noticed the large number of adverts on Facebook and the internet that destroy a woman’s self-esteem by constantly giving her reasons to believe that she is not beautiful.

To counter these ad’s, Dove created an app that allows women to send words of inspiration to each other via Facebook.  Facebook is a social network that has millions of active users, this new app is a great way of reaching and inspiring the masses.

The app has received great success in certain parts of the world with 71 % of women from Brazil, the UK and Australia admitting to feeling better about themselves after seeing the positive messages. 

The app is now active on South Africa’s Facebook page  and I personally can’t wait to start spreading the positive energy to all my Face book friends. 

Considering the success the campaign has achieved in other parts of the world, marketing manager for Dove South Africa Kate Swan strongly feels that the it will have similar success in South Africa.

Create your own positive message with this step-by-step guide:
-Visit the Dove Facebook page

- Click on the option to create your own positive message

-Choose from one of six inspiring sentences such as “The perfect bum is the one you’re sitting on”, “Beauty is an all-age show” and “Every body is beautiful”

-Then choose to send your message to women thinking about either Love, Careers, Body, Beauty or Fitness

-Choose the colour frame you’d like your advert to have

-Click send

-Witness the app previewing your advert and calculating how many women your advert will reach

The message of inspiration I sent says:  “When it comes to your body, love the one you’re with”. Who knew spreading positivity and love could be so simple.

Because a woman is also a: mother, lover and has a career, Dove has integrated all of these features of a woman into the app by having subjects such a 'Love' and 'Careers'. This means that the messages that you can send are more precise  and relevant.

Dove is challenging beauty perceptions
“We’re once again challenging perceptions of beauty and giving women all over the world an inspiring platform from which to recognise their own real beauty, overcome their self-esteem issues and support each other in their journeys of acceptance,” says Swan.

The Dove Ad Makeover App will be available on the Dove South Africa Facebook page until 31 December 2013, so start sending out as many messages of positivity and encouragement as you can.
