It’s the holidays. The whole family is together, laughing, having fun and… eating. So. Much. Eating. And not just simple foods. Oh no. All the rich, tasty family favourites are there. As always, you dish up a big South African sized portion. Or two. After all, you wouldn’t want to offend any of the Aunties, Mamas or Gogos.

After the plates hit the sink, the consequences of overeating start hitting your body. First, your stomach expands, pushing against your other organs, making it harder to breathe and move. Then comes the drowsiness and the dreaded food coma. You might even work up a sweat, and if you’re particularly unlucky, suffer a bout of heartburn. As if that’s not enough, you can also look forward to a couple of days of constipation.

Luckily, it doesn’t have to go down like this. Here are a few simple tips to help you enjoy the holidays, without all the consequences:

Portion control

Sure, you might get a stern look or two, but your body will thank you. You still get to enjoy all your favourite dishes, but in smaller, more manageable quantities.

Drink water

Not only will drinking plenty of water help you feel fuller, it will also lubricate your digestive system and add crucial moisture to the food working its way through your body.

Go slow

Your holiday feast shouldn’t be a race to the finish line. By taking your time, your body can deal with the food more efficiently. Plus, you get to savour each bite.

Move

Being active has a positive effect on your metabolism. A little light exercise will ensure your food keeps moving along, speeding up digestion and reducing the duration of your discomfort.

Back-up plan

Ok, so you’ve overindulged and now you’re constipated. You’re only human. Luckily, step 2, 3, and 4 can still help. And if all else fails, there’s Black Forest Herbal Laxative Tea, which comes in three pleasant flavours. Simply have a cup before bed for gentle relief in the morning.
