How to care for your vintage wear

Care:

Quality is vital when choosing vintage Beautiful silks, wool, leather and suede will all wear better than cheaper man-made fabrics. When in doubt, ALWAYS dry clean.

Furniture polish is great to buff up leather goods, while vinegar eliminates odours easily – mix equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle and mist lightly.  Then, using a clean cloth, wipe the fabric down and leave to dry naturally. Believe it or not, citrus peels or coffee beans in your wardrobe will also do the trick!

The well-tempered closet:

· For me, decent hangers are a must and it doesn’t mean spending a fortune - just avoid the wired ones!

· The best hangers for skirts have rubber-dipped metal or plastic clips. If you have the space to hang trousers full length, then hangers with clips are a good option.

· If space is limited, then the multi–tiered hangers are great.

· For long term storage, opt for heavy-duty plastic clothes bags, but avoid the ones available at dry cleaners’.

· For your delicate vintage pieces, purchase some acid free boxes.

Words of warning:

When shopping for vintage, steer clear of shoes, swimwear and lingerie – except for sexy lace and satin numbers that are in good condition. If you do end up buying vintage shoes, you may find that they smell like a cat peed in them, but don’t depair... Here is a trick to repel the smell:

· Cut the legs off a pair of stockings so that you have two tubes.

· Fill each of them with odour-absorbing cat litter.

· Tie a knot at the top of each tube and leave for 24 hours – works like a gem!

Bonus storage tips:

· Knit dresses should be folded like jumpers.

· Never fold a jumper lengthways – the crease will take forever to come out.

· Blouses can be hung or folded.

· Wine racks are good for storing shoes.

· A fishing tackle box is great for storing jewellery

· To prevent your belts from cracking, belts should be coiled or hung straight, never leave in the garments.

Always in style,

Jules
