The turbulent 2020 academic year had been described as a "critical moment in learning", putting an already struggling education system to the test. And it seems that 2021 is no different.
For many South African pupils, the stress and uncertainty of the pandemic has once again compromised their ability to learn and with the year gaining momentum, parents may be wondering if they should be concerned about their children falling behind.
"If they are anxious, demotivated or generally not themselves, this will affect their ability to learn," says education consultant Philippa Fabbri, who explained to Parent24 that "for a child to be learning-ready or open to receive instruction", factors like emotional well-being and motivation are as important as tangible necessities such as access to resources.
