Porsche has just announced that it's changing the name of its custom paint programme for new cars from "Custom Colour" to Paint to Sample".

Offered through Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, you will now also be able to choose from a new palette of classic Porsche colours, such as Mint Green, Rubystar Red and Maritime Blue. If these classic colours don't appeal to you, you can ask Porsche's paint experts to colour-match your vehicle to almost any colour of any object you desire.

What colour would you pick for your custom Porsche? Let us know in the comments section, or please send us an email here.

How Porsche's Exclusive Manufaktur Paint to Sample programme works

The new Porsche Paint to Sample programme option is limited to the 911, 718 and Taycan models.

You simply hand over a colour sample to your local Porsche Centre. They say anything is feasible, from a handbag to your favourite nail colour or coffee mug. Your colour example is sent to the experts at Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur based in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen (Germany).

Once they've assessed your colour sample, Porsche's colour experts create the formulation. These experts develop the hue based on the available paint components. Then, in several rounds, the shade is further designed to correspond to the sample under different light sources, such as daylight or artificial light.

Next, the feasibility of the colour is tested under production conditions on the car body and its parts. Porsche says it's essential to define the layer thickness, enabling a stable, reproducible and error-free painting process.

Before your vehicle is painted, the colour is applied to a test body. If Porsche's paint experts cannot realise the desired shade per its usual quality standards, Porsche will bear the costs of the feasibility test. Consultation and pricing for Paint to Sample Plus are available at all Porsche Centres in South Africa.

A rising trend in personalised colour for cars

Porsche's new colour range is diverse and depends on the model series and production location, so it's advised to check with your local Porsche Centre in terms of what's available.

For the 911 and 718 models, they say there are more than 100 additional paint colours to choose from. For the Panamera, Macan and Cayenne, customers can choose from more than 50 options, while a further 65 exterior colours complete the offering for Taycan drivers.

Porsche notes that in recent years, demand for custom-painted Porsche cars has risen sharply. With the newly available options, Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur is hoping to satisfy customers with even greater variety.

To support this growing demand for custom-painted Porsche cars, a new colour-mixing bench has been put into operation at its main plant in Zuffenhausen, where its paint specialists blend several dozen ingredients down to the last milligram to achieve the desired shade.

"Unusual paint finishes have always been part of our brand since the very beginning. They are an important differentiating feature for some of our customers," says Alexander Fabig, head of individualisation and classic cars at Porsche AG. "With our latest offer, we are reviving cult-classic colours and expanding the extensive range by more than 160 shades across all model series."
