This is a moment she had anticipated, and she could not be any happier. Thando Ntuli of Munkus won the Talent Search 2022 at SAFW.

Thando speaks to W24 shortly after her collection Sisendleleni (We are on our way) won judges' hearts. Munkus created the collection to represent South African women.

"I wanted to design for a unique and wider age group as the past and the present influence me. The collection looks have layered pieces allowing each woman to wear it the way they want to and add their twist to it," she says.

Each look is named 'ME' in various South African languages (Me, Mina, Nna, Mna, Nne, Mine) and it ends with look seven called 'WE'.

"I focused on the circular skirt as it is a South African staple in our history. I have a lot of structured pieces with collars because I'm drawn to the idea of South African women still being strong, hard-working women," she shares.

"I made a lot of asymmetrical pieces to focus on zero-waste cutting and to make sure I use my fabric to the fullest."

Thando entered the talent search after an unsuccessful entry in 2021, which did not deter her from trying again.

"I think as young people, we are always rushing for life to work out. Entering for a second time and being a finalist means there is a time for everything," she adds.

"It might not be when you want it the most, but it will be when you need it, and everything in that moment will make sense."

The best is yet to come. Thando says she looks forward to being true to her design style and storytelling through her clothing.

She says: "The point of my brand is to give people a sense of home."
