Nike is the most popular brand in South Africa, while Zara is the world's most searched fashion brand

  • Research conducted by UK comparison site, Money.co.uk, reveals that Nike is the most popular fashion brand in South Africa.
  • According to the research, Zara is the most popular brand in 37 countries in 2021.
  • The growth of the Spanish brand is undeniable as there are 2 200 Zara stores in 88 countries.

Nike is South Africa's most popular fashion brand of 2021, according to Google Search Data. 

Research conducted by Money.co.uk uses 12 months of Google search data to find out which fashion brand is searched the most in each country in the world.

In April 2021, the iconic brand released financial results for its fiscal 2021 fourth quarter and full-year, which ended May 31, 2021.

Revenue was $12.3 billion (over R187 billion), up 96% compared to the prior year and increasing 21 percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2019.

Nike is the second most-searched fashion brand globally, and the world-renowned sportswear brand is the most Googled in 36 countries around the globe, including South Africa, Mexico, and Malaysia. Zalando, headquartered in Berlin, Germany, is the world's third most popular fashion brand.

Zara, founded by Amancio Ortega in 1975,has gained a cult following by fashion-conscious individuals as a result of its fast replication of trends, colours and designs that are present on the catwalk.

There are over 2,200 stores and a presence in 88 countries. As the pandemic caused a global disruption, there were store closures announced by the retailer but that has not stopped it from thriving online. 

Compared to the same data from last year (where Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Chanel were the most popular brands), the new data highlights how much our fashion choices have changed over the previous 12 months.

According to the research, no luxury fashion brands feature in the top five, with places taken by Zara, Nike, Zalando, Fashion Nova, and ASOS.

Other details from the report: 

-Louis Vuitton is down 15 spaces compared to 2020 search volumes when the luxury designer took the number one spot-

-Designer labels like Gucci, Chanel, Dior, and Louis Vuitton also feature in the top 20 most searched for brands.
