The South African higher education system is not doing enough to prepare graduates for the workplace.
This much is apparent when feedback from employment experts, like Biron Clark, a founder of CareerSidekick.com, shows that "only 2-3% of employment applications result in an interview out of 250 job applications received".
This is rather worrisome considering that Stats SA's Quarterly Labour Force Survey for 2021 showed that the official unemployment rate among youth (aged 15-34) was 46.3% in the first quarter. Even more worrying was that unemployment among university graduates was 9.3% - a huge number considering the emphasis on education in the job process.
