Seven bursaries to consider if you want to study law in South Africa

Whether you are entering into your first year and just beginning to learn about the legal systems that make up our country, or if you are wishing to study further, funding your degree is almost always a challenge.

We have collated a list of seven bursaries available for students who would like to study law, so that whether you are emulating Harvey Spector or Annalise Keating, funding is one problem you won't have.

1. The HKA Bursary South Africa

Who is HKA?

HKA is a leading consultancy firm offering specialist and expert services in various industries.

Am I eligible?

Students registered for LLB, BA Law or BComm Law are eligible for this bursary. To apply you need to be a South African citizen, be registered at a South African university, have already completed your first year of study, have maintained an average grade of 70% and up, and show a financial need. 2. Webber Wentzel Scholarship Who is Webber Wentzel?

Webber Wentzel was founded in 1868 and is one of South Africa's top law firms.

Am I eligible?

The scholarship is awarded to academically gifted students and goes towards their last two years of their LLB degree. To be eligible you need to be a South African citizen studying at a South African university registered for an LLB degree and have a minimum 65% aggregate. 3. Bowmans Bursary Who is Bowmans?

Bowmans is a pan-African law firm with offices in four different countries and offers legal services in the fields of corporate law, banking, finance and dispute resolution.

Am I eligible?

The bursary is available to students wishing to pursue an LLB, BComm Law or BA Law degree. To be considered you need to be a South African citizen and have financial need. Both university students currently studying law and matric students hoping to start studying law are eligible. 4. Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyer Bursaries

Who is Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyer?

Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyer is a South African law firm with local and international clients from both the public and private sector.

Am I eligible?

Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyer offers bursaries for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. For both bursaries, you need to be a citizen or permanent resident of South Africa and be enrolled at a South African tertiary institution, as well as show academic achievement and financial need. 5. Attorneys Fidelity Fund Bursary

What is the Attorneys Fidelity Fund?

The Attorneys Fidelity Fund (AFF) is a fund that protects the public against loss of trust funds.

Am I eligible?

AFF bursaries are awarded for a maximum of two years. For those studying towards an LLB degree, they would need to have already completed two years of a four-year degree or have completed a qualification in BA Law, BComm Law or a similar degree. 6. Mpumalanga Attorneys Council Bursary

What is the Mpumalanga Attorneys Council?

Part of the Law Society of the Northern Provinces, The Mpumalanga Attorneys Council helps to administer attorneys in the province and keep the public updated.

Am I eligible?

In order to be eligible, you need to be a Mpumapalanga resident, have an excellent academic record and have a clear intent to practice as an attorney. Find out more here: https://allbursaries.co.za/law-bursaries-south-africa/mpumalanga-attorneys-council-bursary/

7. Fasken Martineau / Bell Dewar Bursary

Who is Fasken Martineau/Bell Dewar?

One of the biggest law firms in the world, Fasken Martineau/Bell Dewar offers services in commercial and labour law. Bursary recipients will be expected to do vacation work at the firm, and accept articles of clerkship, if offered.

Am I eligible?

Those willing to apply for the bursary need to be students who are registered for the penultimate year of their law degree and have a 65% or above aggregate. They would also need to have the potential to be an effective employee for the company, and have strong leadership qualities.
