Switch:  How to change when change is hard  by Chip and Dan Heath (Broadway Business)
If you only read one book this year, make it this one!

We all have something in our lives we want to change – a habit, routine, attitude or system. Small changes in our lives, and huge changes in our families, communities, and the world!

The book Switch will go a long way in explaining why the change hasn’t worked before, and how to make it work now.

Using the borrowed concepts of Directing the Rider (our rational side), Motivating the Elephant (our emotional side), and Shaping the Path (our environment), the writers use everyday practical examples of how people have caused successful change in their own lives. The informal writing style makes the stories entertaining and easy to read, and they are very informative and inspiring.

I have recently read, and enjoyed, quite a few books in the same vein, such as Outliers and Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell. They explain many concepts very well. Switch does more than explain, though. It inspires.

It was the kind of book that made me want to rush out and force everyone I meet to read it. And in the weeks after reading it for the second time (yes, I have already read it twice!), I found myself thinking about the concepts all the time.

I cannot remember when last I made so many notes while reading a book, and I was constantly highlighting passages. I kept re-reading parts, and referring back to previous chapters.

It is written in a style I enjoy. It starts with a concept, and explains it. Then it uses practical examples to make the concept clear. It also refers back to concepts from earlier, thus reinforcing them. At the end of each chapter, it summarises the concept again. At the end of the book is a kind of mind-map, which serves as a reminder of each concept, with the illustrating examples. All this helps to make it all ‘stick’. It also makes navigation through the book easier.

Switch goes a long way in explaining why attempts to change did not work in the past, giving good and logical reasons. These made me feel like less of a failure, and left me feeling empowered to try again.

This is a book that I would like to re-read every few years, just to keep the inspiration going.
