The Curse of the Gloamglozer by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell (Random House Children’s Books)
The Curse of the Gloamglozer by dual powerhouse masterminds Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell is both enigmatic and enthralling.

From the opening sentence, one is whisked away into a land of inventive fantasy.

It's a land that is divided into earth and sky, with trolls, trogs and goblins inhabiting the perilous Deepwoods and the treacherous Twilight Woods, whilst creatures from all over the Edge find themselves in the seething urban domain, of Undertown.

However, not all the inhabitants of the Edge live with their feet on the ground.

The floating city of Sanctaphrax is one of academics, alchemists and apprentices whose lives are dedicated to all things sky. Open sky, high sky, middle and lower sky.

As with every land, there are rules and positions of hierarchy which regulate society. However, it is not often that the rule-breakers who are the ones who have instilled them.

In the Curse of the Gloamglozer, the introductory novel to the Edge Chronicles, with the Quint series being the first of three; it is the Most High Academe, Linius Pallitax, ruler of Sanctaphrax and Undertown who does just that.

With an abundance of Knowledge at one’s fingertips, the line between the need to learn for knowledge sake, and the need for knowledge to have power, becomes faint.

It is here, that the adventure begins.

Linius Pallitax, the Most High Academe, unwittingly invokes an ancient curse- the curse of the gloamglozer, and it is up to Quint, to rectify the atrocity of the situation.

Son of a sky pirate captain and new apprentice to Linius Pallitax, the Most High Academe, Quint has been set some highly important tasks.

With the help of Maris, only child of Linius Pallitax- together they seek the truth, and to destroy all evil.

In the Tolkien/ Pratchett/ Carrolls tradition there are spectacular, intricately detailed line drawings giving life to this body of work.

I would highly recommend this to young of heart and rich in mind - It is a stimulating read for both young and old, and as you become familiar with the characters and places of The Edge chronicles, the fantasy simply does not stop there.
