Responsible, enterprising loners, that's how local astrologer Rod Suskin describes the young Capricorn. 

Ruled by the planet Saturn, Capricorn is often portrayed as the mythological sea-goat. 

Born between 22 December and 19 January, the Capricorn child's personality is often a mix of the serious and the playful.   

Wise beyond their years

They usually quickly achieve early developmental milestones like weaning and potty training. Their capacity to develop quickly will continue as they grow, making your Capricorn child very adaptable and self-sufficient. 

This cardinal earth sign may surprise you at just how mature they can be, even at a young age.

"They have a great sense of humour and enjoy adult company," Suskin says, adding that young goats have an innate sense of duty. 

'Capricorn children can be stubborn'

And along with their "consistent, reliable" nature, your Capricorn child will tend to dig in their heels.

"Capricorn children can be stubborn and refuse to do what they are told because they think they know better, or even just because they don't like being told what to do."

Because of this trait, Suskin says you'll need to make sure your reasoning about their chores and responsibilities is on point. 

"Make sure the child knows why they should do something and that the reason makes good sense."

'Melancholic and serious at times'

Another trait you might see in your Capricorn child is a glum disposition, the flip side of their good humour. 

"They can be melancholic and serious at times," the astrologer flags. 

And despite their desire "to be treated a bit like adults", Suskin says little goats do well with assurance and encouragement.

"Capricorns like to have their sense of responsibility and reliability acknowledged."

As little loners, they appreciate solitude and privacy.

"So having their own room or being left alone to play gives them the space they need," the astrologer recommends. 

'The Capricorn child doesn't like people to change their minds'

If you share your child's sun sign, the astrologer says your relationship will be very agreeable "on the whole".

"Parents can expect their children to easily understand and execute responsibilities," Suskin says.

However, as a fellow know-it-all, arguments about "who is right" are bound to arise. Gemini and Sagittarius parents may find their patience wearing thin with their wise beyond their years goat children.

In turn, these little adults may become frustrated with their unpredictable parents.  

"The Capricorn child doesn't like people to change their minds or be late picking them up from school," Suskin notes, which may be more likely with these notoriously fickle sun signs.

'Beyond sun signs'

Even so, sun signs only provide a basic explanation of parent-child compatibility. The astrologer says that greater insight can be found in an individual's complete astrological chart.

"Beyond sun signs, children will also have interactions in those areas of the astrological chart that represent inheritance, genes, siblings and domestic life," he highlights. 

The astrological chart will also show a child's moon sign, revealing "the primary influences in childhood", Suskin notes.
