Emotional, intense little investigators. That's how astrologer and polarity therapist Michaela Meiser defines the Scorpio child.

Ruled by the planet Pluto, Scorpio is often portrayed as a scorpion – and sting they do!

Born between 23 October and 21 November, these children seek to explore the fascinating and intricate aspects of life, which will both surprise and exhaust you.

This article is one in a series on astrology and your child's personality, and in turn your parenting approach. Find the rest of our astrological guide to your child's character here.

'Not afraid to get dirty'

Even as a baby, your Scorpio may possess an intensity that comes through a piercing stare. As they grow, you'll notice their interest in things that would put most people off.

"Scorpio is a fixed water sign and thrives on intensive, emotional interaction. They want to know how things work and are not satisfied with superficial explanations," Meiser says.

And don't expect them to be easily fooled either. These children have a sixth sense and may start their careers as private detectives at an early age.

"Your Scorpio child will thrive on detective activities of any kind and can be quite fearless in investigative explorations, not afraid to get dirty in the mud or take things apart."

And if that wasn't enough, your Scorpio might even take a liking to magic tricks as they enjoy captivating an audience that will most likely be you and their siblings while young.

'A good poker face'

Given their interest in finding the truth, you may be perplexed to find that your Scorpio child tends to keep their own cards close to their chest.

"With their love for secrets, they might present you with a good poker face," she says, which may prove frustrating to both you and their teachers.

Although their secrecy is more likely to do with their privacy than lies, "allow them space to explore their own depths," Meiser advises. But they do need guidance in giving others the same space.

'Drama could be on the cards'

Because of their early affinity for exploring and understanding life and people, they may take to manipulative behaviour, Meiser flags.

Another less pleasant trait you might see in your Scorpio child is their stinging tail, metaphorically speaking. This will be especially evident when they feel they're being mistreated.

"Scorpios feel very deeply and can lash out in uncanny ways when hurt or maltreated," Meiser cautions, adding that parents need to brace themselves for other bad behaviour.

"Not an easy child to raise. Drama could be on the cards as the parental authority will also be tested on an ongoing basis."

'Power play'

Meiser advises parents raising a Scorpio child to do so with "a loving, guiding hand", as adopting an uncompromising parenting style will not go over well.

"Being a strong sign… any power play or control from the parental side will be met with resistance first," she cautions.

As far as general interpretations of parent-child sun sign compatibility, Meiser says fellow water signs Scorpio, Pisces and Cancer will fare well with the Scorpio child, and the earth signs Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn.

Gemini, Libra and Aquarius parents and Aries, Leo and Sagittarius may experience more challenges with their Scorpio child.

The astrologer notes that these air and fire signs may prove "more outgoing and possibly too flighty for the deep Scorpio soul".

"Emotional maturity is one of our biggest human challenges, and your Scorpio child will test you on that. So, irrespective of sign, if you are not ready, there will be clashes, and you might find that it is your Scorpio child ruling the roost."

'A complex set-up'

A closer look at an individual's specific astrological profile can be done via a birth chart and more specific compatibility between parent and child via a composite chart.

These astrological tools will show where potential clashes may arise or where character traits may deviate from the general interpretations listed above.

"How the two systems, parent and child, interact with each other is a complex set-up, and the biggest help a detailed reading can give is to understand one's own need, the need of the child and how the two work together."
