It’s almost time for the holidays, and while most folk will be staying home for the special days, many others will be travelling. But, that doesn’t mean things have to be any different. Here’s our guide to take traditions with you…
So what if you can’t deck your home halls with holiday cheer or be part of the reason for giving Eskom a heart attack with all your Christmas lights, trying to better the neighbour’s display?
CREATING MEMORIES
Great Wolf Lodge New England GM Phillip Cunningham says his workplace is one of 11 indoor waterpark resorts in the US that make it a point to honour guests’ holiday traditions and encourage new ones. He says:
“Families don’t need to fear losing out on making special memories or feeling far from home while vacationing during the holidays.”
Just because you're on the road or spending the holidays out of town, doesn’t mean you can’t make new memories with old traditions. Here’s how…
1 If you’re staying at a hotel or resort, perhaps phone ahead and tell the hotel manager about your special plans so they can try to accommodate or assist you.
2 Take along some games you would usually play while at home. Holiday traditions don’t need to change just because the scenery is different.
3 Don’t forget your camera or video camera to take loads of pictures and capture the moments.
4 If you celebrate Christmas, you could pack a small Christmas tree and have gifts for your children to open. You could even draw a fake chimney and stick it on a wall.
5 Just because it’s scorching outside and you’ve swopped your winter warmers for shorts and flip flops doesn’t mean you still can’t hang Christmas stockings. Be sure to pack them in.
6 Get a trailer, roof rack or bike bar to take along the children’s bicycles, quad bikes or canoe.
