We're not all hypocrites

Hi everyone,

In a recent interview with Playboy magazine the actor, Gary Oldman, known for his roles in The Dark Knight, Dracula, True Romance (and dozens more) went on an obscenity filled rant about his issues with political correctness. In it he defended Mel Gibson and Alec Baldwin for their respective anti-Semitic, racist and homophobic statements. He also used the N-word a number of times.

Gibson made headlines when he went on a hate-filled diatribe against a Jewish police officer. Later, he used the N-word in the worst possible context in a fight with his ex, Oksana Grigorieva. I am not going to repeat any of his statements but if you have a strong stomach you can find it on Google.

In defence of Gibson’s vile outburst Oldman said the following: "He got drunk and said a few things, but we've all said those things. We're all f*cking hypocrites.”

Um, actually Gary, most of us aren’t. There are thousands of people who’d never dream of saying something intentionally hateful about someone’s race, religion, sexual orientation or gender. We’ve certainly not “all said those things”.

And as for saying it’s a problem with political correctness, wrong again. What was said was hate speech, pure and simple.

I’m so sick and bloody tired of white, heterosexual, wealthy men running their mouths about the validity of political correctness and telling the rest of the world how we must feel about their slurs and insults.

“People should take a f*cking joke,” Oldman also said in defence of his two fellow actors. Really, Gary? Sorry for you, buddy, but it’s simply not for you to decide what people who are being “joked” about find acceptable or not.

You’d think a respected Hollywood actor would know better.

Oldman has since apologised (well actually, he made a classic nonpology, only apologising for a fraction of the things he said) but, I’m afraid the damage is done. Showing his true colours he joined the ranks of the sad, entitled dinosaurs who are only beginning to learn now that the world is getting tired of them.

Is it ever okay to use racial and homophobic epithets?
