- With an actual carpet laid out, the 2020 American Music Awards (AMAs) were one of the last opportunities of the year for A-listers and their stylists to flex their style muscles.
- Hosted by Taraji P. Henson, the awards ceremony held on Sunday 22 November, gave us a few red carpet looks worth double-tapping on, but we also couldn't help but notice the glamour on the stars' hair and faces.
- Here, we look at 12 celebs who wore current leading beauty trends, including cornrows, lip gloss, and popping eyelids.
Ever since its full-time return circa 2016, lip gloss has had an enduring foray into our beauty trend lists.
And given that there's been a collective decline in how frequently we wear lipstick as masks now accessorise our faces, lip gloss is the new best friend we take everywhere with us.
Add to this a statement on our eyes by virtue of either lash extensions or an eyeshadow look you can spot from a mile away.
This was evident on the 2020 AMA red carpet as pink, red, or burgundy lips were a rare sight... if even at all.
In a 2018 report, Newby Hands, beauty director at Net-a-Porter, told Business of Fashion that the gloss trend is all part of the appeal of looking youthful and healthy.
Let's also not forget how nostalgia has played a major role in bringing back and re-imagining fashion and beauty trends since late 2016. And now, lipstick's pandemic-induced hiatus has made gloss' demand even more prominent.

"From glowing complexions to shiny hair, glossy lips complete this trend that results in a healthy, radiant and hydrated look," Newby told BoF.
Again, this modest approach to a high glamour look was the order of the evening at the AMAs.
According to BoF, at the time the articl was written, lipstick was still dominating the market in terms of sales. However, lip gloss sales have skyrocketed to $2.94 billion (over R40 billion) since 2014.
So when it comes to lips...
More gloss, less stick
Substituting the usual statement lipstick shade for lip gloss, the majority of the AMA attendees opted for voluminous, lush lashes or a standout hairdo (or headwrap) as their beauty exclamation points on this year's red carpet.

Simple and straight back cornrows
Previously seldom spotted on the red carpet as they were considered a "glammed down" look, cornrows are clearly taking their spot as the must-do sophisticated hairstyle for summer.

Keeping to the theme of simple sophistication, our stars also offered slicked back updos and dewy skin.

Has she just showered or just had a swim? It doesn't matter - we just love the wet look for its fresh allure, whether sleek or wavy.
On the red carpet, the likes of Doja Cat and Jennifer Lopez complemented their wet looks with understated makeup, garnishing their lids with a bit of high shimmer eyeshadow, and opting for nude lips.
