Did you know that of the 55 737 brand new Volkswagen cars (including VW Commercial Vehicles) sold in South Africa in the first ten months of 2021, most of them were optioned with the tilting and sliding panoramic sunroof? The sunroof is the most popular optional feature across the VWSA model line-up.

Features that customers are willing to pay extra for

The panoramic sunroof was also the most selected optional feature in the Tiguan model range. In the outgoing Caddy model range, however, only the fixed sunroof is available, which was the most popular optional feature in 2021.

Park Assist with the rearview camera was the most popular option in the T-Cross and the T-Roc model ranges.

In the Touareg, the Advanced Safety Package, which consists of Lane Assist and Side Assist with Night Vision and Head-up display, was the most selected optional feature in 2021.

Due to the utilitarian nature of the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and particularly the Amarok, the best-selling optional feature was the heavy-duty suspension upgrade and tow bar, which enhances useability and practicality.

We love big wheels and tyres too

The Volkswagen line-up's wheel and tyre size offerings start from 14-inch wheels available in the Polo Vivo up to the 21-inch Suzuka alloy wheels available in the Touareg. The 15-inch Estrada alloy wheel is the most common option in the Polo Vivo, while it is the 16-inch Torsby alloy wheel in the Polo that remains sought after.

The 17-inch Manilla alloy wheel, offered in conjunction with R-line, is the best-selling option in the T-Cross range and the 18-inch Montego alloy wheel is the most popular optional item in the T-Roc.

The dark graphite 20-inch and 21-inch Suzuka alloy wheels were the best-selling in the Tiguan and Touareg, respectively, this year.

In the Amarok, the 19-inch Milford alloy wheels were the most selected. Meanwhile, Kombi buyers chose the optional 17-inch Woodstock alloy wheels for their new rides. Caravelle and California customers chose the 17-inch Aracaju alloy wheels as a favourite.

Black pack special treatment rises in popularity

The exterior VW Black Style Package, first introduced in the Tiguan and Touareg in 2019, has proven to be a successful addition to the Volkswagen model range. 47 per cent and 30 per cent of all Touaregs and Tiguans, respectively, sold in the South African market are fitted with this styling package. The Black Style Package was also recently introduced in the Golf GTI and Polo Vivo derivatives.

Customers in the premium segment are also keen on safety options. The Volkswagen model range has a host of class-leading driver assistance systems, and the company's Advanced Safety Package was the best-selling optional driver assistance system, with 80 per cent of Touaregs sold in South Africa boasting this feature.

Trailer Manoeuvring Assist was the most popular optional feature in the Kombi range, and due to its size, most Crafter customers ordered Park Assist with the rearview camera for improved manoeuvrability.

"The panoramic sunroof is especially popular in the Polo GTI and Golf GTI model ranges, which have seen 90 per cent of all of these vehicles being sold with this optional feature. The panoramic sunroof is a standard feature in the Golf R and Touareg. The only reason we do not have a 100 per cent uptake in the GTI models is that some of our corporate customers do not opt for the panoramic sunroof for their fleets," says Steffen Knapp, head of the Volkswagen Passenger Car brand in SA.

Volkswagen South Africa will be launching the refreshed Polo range in South Africa in January 2022 and the eagerly awaited Taigo crossover later in 2022 amongst a raft of new and improved models.
