- For its ninth rendition, Constitution Hill’s Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival has evolved to take place online and in person.
- This iteration will feature masterclasses, dialogues, a film festival, a picnic event, as well as a music festival.
- Taking place from 16 to 21 November 2020, the virtual and physical festival are free to attend.
For the last eight years, Constitution Hill’s Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival has paid tribute to the youth of 1976 through celebrating and nurturing artists using the annual Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival. However this year the festival has had to adapt to meet Covid-19 regulations.
In a bid to continue the development and elevation of music, film, art, design, dance and performance practices, 2020 sees the Constitution Hill precinct is hosting The Basha Uhuru Creative Uprising.
This 2020 iteration will feature masterclasses, dialogues, a film festival, a picnic event, as well as a music festival.
The film festival will feature South African films Moffie, Knuckle City, Loving Thokoza and African Cypher. The musical festival will feature the likes of Fif Laa, Kitchen Mess, Ms Elisa the Selector, Olwwee, Mx Blouse, Abafazi, Ncamisa & the Band and Easy Freak
Apart from the film festival and picnic, all the above mentioned will be free to view on the Basha Uhuru Freedom Fest and Constitution Hill social media platforms.
Hosted in both a physical and virtual space, this year’s event looks to expand beyond the festival in keeping the platform and programme alive through out the year.
To expand beyond just the festival, the precinct is also launching the Conhill Creative Network. Commenting on the network, chief executive officer of Constitution Hill, Dawn Robertson says this about its purpose:
In addition to the Conhill Creative Network, the festival will maintain an ongoing programme for designers. Titled Constitution Hill Creative Collab, the programme will support artisans, craftspeople, illustrators and digital designers by selling their work on the Constitution Hill online market: The Movement Store.
