  • Zeitz MOCAA will host its annual gala on Sunday.
  • The theme is Afro-futurism and it features immersive installations by Athi-Patra Ruga.
  • For Koyo Kouoh, the museum's executive director and chief curator, the gala is a moment to celebrate and reflect on their achievements of the past year.

Zeitz MOCAA will host its annual gala on Sunday in Cape Town with Afro-futurism as the theme.

The gala kicks off Cape Town Art Week "with multiple activations and an exclusive auction from a line-up of celebrated artists raising funds to support the museum's curatorial and education programming", according to a press release.

The museum also collaborated with artist Athi-Patra Ruga; the gala scenography and key design elements are inspired by the artist's work.

"A key feature of the gala is an exclusive art auction facilitated by Strauss & Co," the press release stated.

Works by William Kentridge, Senzeni Marasela, Mary Evans, Zandile Tshabalala and others were donated for the auction.

"The Zeitz MOCAA Gala is the museum's annual benefit event and highly awaited grand evening on the social calendar," said Koyo Kouoh, the museum's executive director and chief curator.

"Proceeds from the gala contribute towards the museum's curatorial and education programming," Kouoh added.

She considers the gala as essential to the "institution's mission of equipping the next generation of museum professionals through programmes such as the Zeitz MOCAA & University of the Western Cape (UWC) Museum Fellowship Programme".

It is also a moment for us to celebrate and reflect on our achievements of the past year.

The gala recognises and honours those who "shape the landscape of contemporary art in Africa", she said.

"Patrons and guests are invested individuals from the art, fashion, film and other industries who attend the Gala to celebrate contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora," Kouoh said.

"Patrons' support of the museum allows us to continue providing exhibitions of the highest standard as well as educational programmes, many of which are free and open to youth and adults alike" she continued.

"At the heart of Zeitz MOCAA's vision lies a desire to be an African institution that actively contributes to the production and transmission of knowledge on African and diasporic artistic practice," she said. "An endeavour couched in a belief in the importance of permanent institutional structures on the continent," she added.
