Oprah Winfrey has offered some wise advice for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry about King Charles III's coronation.

Plans for the king's coronation in May are in full swing. A new royal website details the formalities and celebrations for the momentous occasion, to take place over three days from 6 - 8 May.

Earlier this month, News24 reported that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had been formally invited to the landmark event; however, "an immediate decision on whether [they] will attend will not be disclosed at this time," a representative for the couple said.

Appearing on CBS Mornings with longtime friend Gayle King, Oprah offered advice for the couple, as Harry's relationship with his father, brother Prince William and the rest of the family becomes increasingly estranged after he exposed the extent of their fractured relations in a book, Netflix documentary and numerous interviews.

"It's been reported that Harry and Meghan have received an invitation to the coronation," Gayle, who was a guest at Meghan's 2019 baby shower, said. "Do you think they should go? Do you think they should not go? Is it something you'd like to comment on?"

Oprah replied:

"I think they should do what they feel is best for them and for their family. That's what I think. That's what the bottom line is. It comes down to: What do you feel is the best thing for you?"

"They haven't asked me my opinion," Oprah added.

The television icon has a close relationship with Harry and Meghan after she was welcomed into the couple's home for a wide-ranging interview following their decision to step back from their royal roles in March 2021.

Meanwhile, King Charles was said to be eager for the tension between the families to "calm down" in time for the crowning ceremony.

A source close to the royal household told People: "It is such a momentous occasion for Charles, and he would want his son to be at the coronation to witness it. He would like to have Harry back in the family. If they don't sort it out, it will always be part of the King's reign and how he has left his family disjointed. He has had a reputation as a distant parent, and it would be awful for him for that to continue."
