Veteran radio DJ and voice-over artist Bongani Njoli, best known as the voice behind e.tv's Friday Action Night movie and weekend blockbuster promos, has died.
Njoli, 54, died on Sunday. His cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
"Everyone at the e.tv family is deeply saddened by the sudden loss of Bongani," e.tv's Bennum van Jaarsveld said in a statement to News24.
He added:
Van Jaarsveld said those who worked closely with Njoli would sorely miss his easy-going, gentle manner and utter professionalism. He said they had contacted his family and would contribute to the funeral.
"Lala Ngoxolo (rest in peace) Bongani Njoli," he said.
According to a City Press report, Njoli's career at the channel began in 2000 when he was called back after a previously unsuccessful audition. Per the report, he was turned down for "sounding too much like a deejay".
Before e.tv, the publication said the qualified teacher had a voice-over gig at the Lion Match company. During his student years, he also worked at UCT Radio in 1990 and was the first black deejay on Good Hope FM from 1994.
Bongani was also part of the team that launched Discom Vibes as a retail radio station for Clicks in 2004, where he was a presenter and music compiler until 2007, when he joined Cape Town's Heart 104.9FM doing two shows until 2009.
He joined Cape Town's Magic 828 in 2016. As a music producer, having worked on two SAMA-nominated albums in 2000, he started a music production company, Ebomvu Entertainment, in 1999 with producer Gabi le Roux.
