Sixty years after her death, Marilyn Monroe was cast back into the limelight as the subject of the buzzy Netflix biopic Blonde.
Based on the bestselling, semi-fictionalised book by Joyce Carol Oates, Blonde, now streaming, is a dark retelling of the iconic actor's life that lifts the lid on the trauma and fierce intelligence behind Monroe's bubbly, sexualised image of the time.
Cuban actor Ana de Armas stars as Monroe, with Australian director Andrew Dominik, who has made two other darkly poetic biopics – Chopper and The Assassination of Jessie James by the Coward Robert Ford – at the helm.
Armas was not an obvious choice, with grumblings online about her slight Cuban accent when the trailer was released. However, Dominik and Brad Pitt, who served as a producer on the film, have continuously praised the actor for her performance.
But how does Blonde stack up against the real deal side by side?
In the video above, Mojo highlights still and moving images taken of Monroe while she was alive compared to stills and clips from the fictional film.
