There are sci-fi films, and then there are Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi films. When Dune first made its mark in 2021, the studio wasn't even certain that the director's singularly artistic approach would sway a franchise-saturated audience, holding back on greenlighting the sequel until the box office numbers came in. Worst of all, it was simultaneously released on Warner Bros.'s streaming platform Max. Thankfully, the cinema gods smiled generously upon the intricately crafted cinematic masterpiece, allowing Villeneuve to continue with his vision in Dune: Part Two.
