  • South African classic Sarafina! will be released in cinemas next month.
  • Lead actor Leleti Khumalo said the release, during Women's Month, was to pay homage to the women who shaped the country's struggle against apartheid.
  • Last month, Sarafina! was announced as the official 2023 selection in the Cannes Classics category at the Cannes Film Festival.

A whopping three decades since its world premiere, South African classic Sarafina! will be released in movie theatres during Women's Month to pay homage to the remarkable women who shaped the struggle.

Lead actor Leleti Khumalo shared the news on social media, saying the anti-apartheid musical would be released in cinemas on Friday, 11 August.

"A captivating new poster which depicts the powerful female characters in the film has been designed especially for this release," she continued in the caption to the poster.

"Among these characters are Sarafina's mother, Angela, who works as a domestic helper played by the legendary Miriam Makeba; Mary Masembuko, the outspoken and inspiring teacher played by Academy-Award winner Whoopi Goldberg and Sarafina, the fearless young girl and student activist played by Leleti Khumalo."

Other notable actors in the film are Mbongeni Ngema, John Kani and Somizi Mhlongo.

Khumalo said the characters "vividly" portrayed the important role women played as the backbone of the struggle against apartheid.

Sarafina! synopsis:
Sarafina is a young black South African struggling for freedom during apartheid. While she has remained relatively silent in her opposition of the racist government in her country, the movement to make the language of Afrikaans the official language in her school leads her to protest in the streets with her fellow students. Her anti-government views become even more intense when her favourite teacher Mary Masembuko is arrested for protesting.

"This timely release during women's month serves as a poignant tribute to the indomitable spirit of these brave women," Khumalo continued.

An all-new trailer has also been released to promote the movie ahead of its cinema reboot.

The category recognised films deemed to be works of quality and contributed to the evolution of motion picture arts while encouraging the development of the film industry worldwide.
