  • The Recording Industry of South Africa is gearing up for this year's South African Music Awards.
  • Though the date for the awards has yet to be shared, the nominees will be announced at the beginning of next month.
  • Last year, the awards received criticism from industry heavyweight Zakes Bantwini, among others, for allegedly shoddy planning and execution.

After reportedly being delayed due to financial issues, per Sunday World, the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) is gearing up for this year's South African Music Awards (Samas), scheduled for later this year.

Though the organisation has yet to share the date for the awards, the nominees will be announced in Soweto at the beginning of October. A new home for the music awards, previously held at Sun City, will also be announced.

"The South African music industry has produced exceptional music the past year and seen our artists take their brands to new heights both locally and globally. We are proud to kick off #SAMA29 and look forward to sharing with the country some exciting new developments as the Samas find a new home," RiSA CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi said.

In July, the long-running awards faced criticism from the publication for being behind schedule.

Last year, the formerly coveted awards also received criticism from industry heavyweight Zakes Bantwini, among others, for allegedly shoddy planning and execution.

Sibisi attributed this to "less than optimal" engagement with their members (record companies and artist-led labels) because of Covid-19 and government-imposed restrictions.

Shortly after the awards, Sibisi also said they had suspended the Sama project team and instituted internal disciplinary processes for the alleged flouting of Sama rules.
