Former Uzalo actor Masandi, real name Sandile Mfusi, is over the moon after receiving his first award at the recent Crown Gospel Awards.
Masandi, previously a pop musician, received the best music video award for Ithemba, taken from his introductory Gospel EP, Kaleidoscope. He was also nominated in the best newcomer category.
"I am so happy and grateful to have been awarded this award and to be recognised by the gospel community," he said in a press statement. "This is only the beginning of the great things faith and God can do."
He added:
Per the statement, Masandi's transition to worship and inspirational music was prompted by a near-fatal car accident, which led to temporary paralysis and him spending three months in a head brace. Following the accident, the musician and actor committed to the pact he made with God to transition to gospel music and become a steward of the gospel after his life was spared.
To celebrate his win, the Durbanite will share an EPK (electronic press kit) where he will speak to his supporters through key moments in his musical journey and everything that has influenced him as an artist thus far. The World of Masandi will also give them insight into his childhood, how he grew up, his time in school and the musical genres that shaped his approach to making music.

Speaking about the award-winning music video, director Monde Dube said the main purpose of the performance scenes was to capture Masandi on a spiritual journey.
"We followed him walking on a long road to show him on a pilgrimage home, toward himself," he said in the statement. "The scenes we incorporated, such as the desert scene, give depth to his journey and help viewers imagine just how rich and complex a spiritual voyage can be, and hopefully, it inspired them to explore their own."
