HBO's controversial series The Idol, starring Lily-Rose Depp and Abel Tesfaye, better known as R&B singer The Weeknd, will not be returning for a second season, according to Deadline.

The show was created by Tesfaye, Euphoria's Sam Levinson and Reza Fahim. The first season of The Idol, which only had five episodes, was panned by critics and fans alike. The series holds a meagre 4.8/10 on IMDb and a 25% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The production of the series was reportedly tumultuous; Amy Seimetz was originally set to direct but left the project even after completing a lot of work on the show, according to Rolling Stone. Levinson then stepped in to fill her role.
The show was initially going to have six episodes in its early phases, but ended up only having five. According to Deadline, there was a possibility for a second season, but the creators did not have a plan for more seasons.
According to Variety, an HBO spokesperson shared:
