Sounds of SA liberation explored in new Mzansi Magic music film series

  • Mzansi Magic (DStv 161) has introduced a music film series which will take viewers on a journey of South African music and the stories behind it over the past 30 years.

  • M-Net local entertainment channels director Shirley Adonisi said the show is a "remarkable" music film series that celebrates the sound of South African liberation and the cultural and social movements that shaped it.

Kwesta, Babes Wodumo, JR, Magarimbe and DJ Zinhle are some of the music industry greats viewers can look forward to seeing when Mzansi Magic's (DStv 161) brand-new three-part music film series premieres later this month.

According to a press statement, Pop Goes Freedom, which premieres on Sunday, 30 April at 17:00, explores the sounds of South African liberation and the music which served as a soundtrack to youth culture over the past 30 years.

"This series celebrates the modern South African sound and the stories behind it, featuring interviews with influential musicians and industry professionals as well as archival footage and newly filmed content," the statement read.

Per the statement, the series shows how the South African music scene has evolved and changed.

"The series celebrates the people behind the music and their stories of perseverance, resilience and creativity," the statement continued. "It also remembers the moments of joy and celebration that were made possible by the music."

M-Net local entertainment channels director Shirley Adonisi said the show is a "remarkable" music film series that celebrates the sound of South African liberation and the cultural and social movements that shaped it.

"It is a reminder of the powerful force of music in unifying people and creating a sense of identity and community," she said.
