The surprising formula to creating New Girl's True American game

accreditation

There's one particular scene in The Office that had us on the floor laughing - and it was totally unscripted.

The iconic "Nine-Nine!" in Brooklyn Nine-Nine only became a thing after Terry Crews' delivery.

And the cast of New Girl made up with all the rules to True American.

You'll recall it was "50% drinking game, 50% life-size Candy Land", the floor was lava, and you always had to have a beer in your hand as you attempted to get to the king of the castle, which was a bottle of liquor surrounded by cans of beer.

Zooey Deschanel told E! News it was every bit as "chaotic" to film as it was to watch – and in case you didn't know, the game, was totally made up.

"I don't have the deep mental understanding that what we were doing in that loft, people were really watching. So for me, that's just a home movie. And then when people started playing, for us, it was the weirdest, because we were like, how could you play a made-up game with no rules?"

Max Greenfield, who played Schmidt, said producers would "yell at you to just say things", while Jake Johnson, aka Nick Miller, revealed the cast often improvised bits of the script.

"We would be doing moments, and then people will take to them, and you're like, oh, that's now a line people like. That was just goofing around in that moment."
