South African-born Jaco van Gass was severely wounded in the war in Afghanistan in 2009, losing his left arm. He underwent 11 surgeries and survived to become a professional athlete and adventurer. He has travelled to the North Pole, climbed Everest, participated in Prince Harry’s Invictus Games, and won a cycling gold medal at the Paralympics in Tokyo in 2020. In Unequivocal, he tells his inspirational story. In this edited excerpt, he describes the battle in Afghanistan that nearly took his life.
