Winter. It’s bitterly cold inland and slightly warmer but much wetter along the coast.

South African winters can be testing if you are a cyclist. You get to sleep a bit later for those weekend rides, but any metres you roll in a shadow streak along your local route will trigger some shivers.

And if you are a Gauteng rider, even the bluest sky and the absence of long shadows on a riding route do not guarantee any thermal comfort. In fact, it is quite often the opposite.
