South Africa's Tashas Group will be expanding its family with the opening of a brand-new location in London next month.

"We are thrilled to be opening at Battersea Power Station as our first UK location. At tashas, we are passionate about curating memorable moments with great food in beautiful environments. We can't wait to bring the tashas brand of hospitality to London," Founder and CEO Natasha Sideris said in a statement.

It opened its doors 18 years ago in Johannesburg, and tashas has since expanded to 15 locations stretching across South African soil. Its international footprint continues to grow with branches in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and now the UK.

The November introduction of the popular restaurant will include a selection of new dishes and an entirely new drinks menu while maintaining many of the classic meals that are popular at tashas.

What's on the menu

Carefully crafted by the team's beverage director, Krystian Hordejuk, the drinks menu will feature a selection of matcha-based drinks, healthy smoothies, freshly squeezed juices, mocktails and cocktails.

"We've kept the 'fan favourites' but have done extensive research to make sure that we have aligned to key factors and influences that are in the UK. As our first store in this market, we're making sure we serve what our customers love, but also dishes that will likely become their new classics," culinary director Jill Okkers explained.

The UK menu will have its unique aspects of salads and a range of healthy appetizers, inclusive of the Berry Fluff with Chia Pudding and a Matcha Green Blast. New dishes making their breakthrough is the Sweet Toast, which is described as "a classic play on a Bostock with homemade almond paste, apricot jam and spiced syrup-soaked brioche". Another meal exclusive to the UK branch is the Cornflake Pork Schnitzel, allowing diners to indulge in pork loin bedded in cornflakes and served with a creamy potato salad and fresh slaw.

According to the establishment's philosophy, the aim of an experience at tashas is to indulge in beautiful food that is accompanied by a sophisticated setting and the deliverance of engaging service.

"tashas is known for its warm and laid-back approach, and for serving unpretentious, generous comfort food in stylish settings. Every tashas venue is unique in its own way, with its own distinctive style inspired by a place or a time, reflected in both the menus and the design of each individual location [sic]," the statement reads.

In maintaining their philosophy in the UK, they have consciously adhered to a design that will allow guests "the feeling of sitting inside a cappuccino".

The space will be occupied with layers of dark timber, adding a high gloss textured stucco finish to the walls, wrapped in a delicate paper installation. To add an authentic touch to the interior, there will be work from contemporary South African artists included.

"Marble, timber and brass have been used extensively throughout the space - from the intricate mosaic tiles on the floor to the delicious chocolate-coloured timber on the walls."

More exciting moves are on the horizon for the franchise as they simultaneously announce the opening of new locations to follow in Cape Town and Johannesburg for 2024.

"South Africa remains the heart and soul of tashas and we are excited about opening these new locations," said Sideris.

The Battersea Power Station branch will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
