Sales in South Africa's bakkie segment are thoroughly dominated by locally built contenders, with the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max owning the podium spots, month in and month out. 

So, it's exceedingly difficult for imported models – which are generally pricier (owing to factors such as exchange-rate woes and import duties) and tend to forgo any SA-specific development work – to compete. 

On a related note, one-tonne bakkies built on another automaker's platform have also historically struggled in our market.
