  • Maintaining and servicing your car regularly is the best way to save money and fuel.
  • Minor and major services are usually performed after a certain mileage is reached; these are called service intervals.
  • It's essential to know the difference between a minor and major service and which parts need to be replaced in your vehicle.

South Africa is set for another massive fuel hike, and the cost of living is constantly excruciating for most.

If we didn't have such dire electricity problems, electric vehicles would probably be much more appealing - even if the price tags are out of reach for the average Joe. But, while we can't afford a new or used car or downgrade to something more affordable, maintaining your current vehicle is the best way to save money.

One of the best fuel-saving tips that really work is maintaining your car and ensuring it is serviced regularly and on time. It will keep your vehicle running smoothly and fuel efficiently. Depending on how many kilometres are on your car's clock, you might require a minor or major car service. Besides the price, the main difference between these two types of services is the amount of time and parts needed.

When should I service my car?

When to service your car varies between manufacturers, but as a general guideline, minor car services are usually carried out every 10 000 to 15 000 kilometres, and major car services usually at around 30 000 to 45 000 kilometres. Consult your car manual to confirm the specific servicing requirements for your vehicle. Most modern cars have a service light on the dashboard that lets you know when a service is due.

What does a minor and major service entail?

"Minor services typically include a comprehensive vehicle system, and diagnostics check and oil filter change; checking all fluid levels, filter conditions, tubes and hoses for leaks; fan belt and brake pad inspection", says Johnny Pretorius, Sales Director at MotorHappy, a supplier of motor management solutions and car insurance options. "The service will also include checking all lights and tyre pressure.

"A major car service is the most comprehensive type of car service, with a full vehicle inspection.

"It includes the outside of the vehicle, hinges and latches, and the timing belt. It usually involves spark plugs and filters, replacing transmission and differential oils, and checking brake and clutch fluid. This is also when wheel bearing grease will be checked and replaced if necessary.

"These are just some of the items that would be covered in a major car service as the technician works through a comprehensive checklist that ensures your car is inspected from top to bottom. If the technician detects any problems during the service, you should receive a quote for any additional work that might be required," advises Pretorius.

In this tough financial climate, cash-strapped motorists might be tempted to skip car services, but Pretorius says this could be a costly mistake in the long run.

"A car consists of complex systems that need regular maintenance to keep the vehicle in a good roadworthy condition. When you service your car as per the manufacturer's recommendations, it is more fuel efficient, and you minimise the risk of breaking down and incurring unexpected repair bills. As the saying goes, take care of your car in the garage, and the car will take care of you on the road."

If you miss out on any services, your car's warranty could become invalid. Keep a close eye on the recommended time frame or kilometres between car services.

Pretorius points out that a car with a full-service record is often more valuable than a car without one because it shows the vehicle's overall condition, who did the work and when the work was carried out. Service history will also show if the car has received any recalls or if any warranty or major repair work was required.

"A good car service plan will help you service your car on time. Car servicing can be expensive, but with a service plan, you can budget for this cost with easy monthly payments. Different Service Plan products are available in the market, and the benefits may differ slightly from product to product, so it is best to shop around."

What about older cars?

Maitland Auto Clinic owner Paul Kasker says with older vehicles, it's best to do a minor service and an inspection service every 12 months or 15000km.

Kasker says: "We don't just do oil changes because things tend to break; if you don't do an inspection service, it means you miss the chance to catch an issue on a part before it breaks.

"I suggest an inspection service comprising a minor service and vehicle inspection. The vehicle inspection should include a suspension check and a basic or visual electrical check, including battery, cables and charge rate. Belts, tensioners and rollers check where stripping is not necessary. Front and rear brake inspection (as sliders get stuck or wheel cylinders start leaking) and adjacent when necessary."

He says a car's petrol filter should be changed every 45000km and a cambelt generally changed every 90 000km unless otherwise suggested by the manufacturer.

Kasker adds that once your mechanic has a recorded history of your vehicle's maintenance, he may opt to do minor services every second service as he would be confident in longevity and replacement times on parts fitted.
